Understanding Short Links in Telerivet
Short links help you understand who is engaging with your messages. When you shorten a link in Telerivet, each contact receives a unique tracked link. This lets you measure clicks, segment your audience, and build smarter follow-up journeys.
Short links are available in Send Message, Message Broadcasts, and all Campaign types
What Short Links Do
Short links allow you to:
- Reduce long URLs into a simple, SMS-friendly format
- Track which contacts clicked your link
- View results at the campaign and message level
- Trigger follow-up actions based on clicks
- Build segments such as “interested”, “not interested”, or “needs follow-up”
Each contact receives a unique version of the link, which lets Telerivet identify who clicked.
How Short Links Work
When you insert a short link, Telerivet automatically:
- Generates a unique randomized link for each contact
- Redirects that link to your destination URL
- Tracks the click event when the link is opened
- Records the results in your broadcast or campaign report
Two Ways to Use Short Links

Telerivet gives you two simple options depending on how you prefer to work.
1. Automatically shorten links in your message
When you paste a URL into the message field, you can check the box:
Shorten links / track clicks
This option:
- Converts all URLs in your message into short links
- Applies your chosen expiration window
- Generates a unique link for each contact
2. Insert a short link manually
You can also click the link icon in the message composer to open the Insert Short Link window.
Here you can:
- Enter your destination link
- Preview the short link format
- Choose the short link domain (for example, rvt.me)
- Set link expiration (up to 365 days)
The short link you see in the composer is a placeholder. It represents the format and length of the real links but is not the final per-contact URL.
Understanding Link Settings
When you insert a short link, you can adjust two key settings:
Short Link Domain
This is the domain your contacts will see. By default, links use rvt.me.
For branded or custom domains contact us.
Link Expiration
Short links stop tracking clicks after the expiration period you set. Telerivet supports up to 365 days. After expiration, the link no longer redirects or registers clicks.
Viewing Click Results
After sending a message or campaign using short links, you can view click activity in your broadcast or campaign report.
You will see:
- Which contacts clicked
- Which contacts did not click
- Total click counts
- Filters for “Clicked” and “Not Clicked”
This helps you quickly understand engagement and take action.
Using Click Tracking for Segmentation
Click data becomes powerful when you use it to segment or automate.
For example, you can:
- Add contacts to a “Interested” group if they click
- Trigger a follow-up message or service
- Compare engagement across different audiences
- Identify contacts who may need reminders
Best Practices
- Use short links for any message that includes a URL
- Keep destination pages mobile-friendly
- Add expiration if your link is time-sensitive
- Use click filters to understand who is engaging
- Build follow-up campaigns based on click behavior
- Avoid placing too many links in one SMS
Short links work best when paired with clear calls to action and simple landing pages.
Connectivity Note
Some mobile carriers may suppress or modify links depending on your location and routing provider. If you want to add a more link-friendly channel such as Viber or WhatsApp to your Telerivet account in addition to SMS, contact us and we can help you set it up.
