Virtual Phone Numbers

Send and receive SMS and calls with a local phone number in 30+ countries, managed entirely from the cloud.

In certain countries, you can use virtual phone numbers to send and receive SMS messages and voice calls from Telerivet's cloud servers.

There are two ways to get a virtual number connected to Telerivet:

  • Get one directly from Telerivet: available in the United States and Canada. Telerivet handles provisioning and you pay per message with no third-party account required.

  • Bring your own connectivity: connect a virtual number from a third-party provider such as Twilio or Vonage, or from nearly any other SMS gateway with an SMPP or HTTP API. You pay the provider directly for the number and messages.

If virtual numbers are not available in your country, the Telerivet Gateway app works anywhere with a local SIM on an Android phone.

How it works

Virtual phone numbers are provided by a third-party service that connects Telerivet's servers to local telephone networks for SMS and voice. Once connected, you manage messages, contacts, and automation through Telerivet's platform with no additional software required. Some virtual numbers support both SMS and voice calls, while others may only support one or the other.

Get a number directly from Telerivet

In the US and Canada, you can get a virtual number directly from Telerivet with no third-party account required. Telerivet charges a per-message fee in addition to your standard service plan.

Virtual numbers are intended for communicating with contacts in the same country. International SMS is unreliable and not recommended. Your use case will require approval before the number is provisioned.

In the US, virtual numbers also require completing a 10DLC campaign registration process before you can send SMS.

Please note that virtual numbers can't be used to verify a phone number with banks or online services like WhatsApp, Google, or PayPal. SMS messages containing a verification code from an online service will not be received.

Bring your own connectivity

If you already have an account with an SMS or voice provider, or your country isn't covered by Telerivet's direct offering, connect your own number to Telerivet and manage everything from one place. You pay the provider directly for message costs and Telerivet for platform usage. Telerivet integrates directly with the providers below:

Pricing: Phone numbers typically cost between $1/month and $10/month, depending on the country. Twilio charges incoming SMS messages at $0.0075/SMS for most countries. The rate for outgoing SMS messages depends on the country, and ranges between $0.0075/SMS and $0.25/SMS for most countries.

Pricing: Phone numbers typically cost between €0.70 and €30 per month, depending on the country. The rate for outgoing SMS messages depends on the country, and ranges between €0.005/SMS and €0.20/SMS for most countries. Incoming SMS messages are €0.0057/SMS in most countries.

Other SMS gateway providers

Telerivet can integrate with nearly any SMS gateway or aggregator that offers an SMPP or HTTP API, which covers the vast majority of regional and country-specific providers.

Custom integrations are subject to an additional fee for initial development and ongoing support, on top of your standard Telerivet plan. You will also pay your provider directly for number rental and message costs.

When to Use a Virtual Number

A virtual number is the right fit when:

  • You need two-way messaging or inbound calls without maintaining an Android device
  • You're operating in a country where virtual numbers are available
  • You want a persistent local number associated with your brand or team
