Virtual Phone Numbers

Send and receive messages and calls with a local phone number.

In certain countries, you can use virtual phone numbers to send and receive SMS messages, and make and receive calls from Telerivet's cloud servers.

You can connect virtual numbers to Telerivet from various third-party providers, including Twilio and Vonage. In this case, you would pay the third-party provider for the number and the cost of messages and calls.

In some countries, you can pay Telerivet directly to send and receive messages and calls via a virtual number, without needing an account with a third-party provider.

If you need to send and receive SMS messages in countries where a virtual number is not available, we recommend the Telerivet Gateway app, which works in any country.

How it works

Virtual phone numbers are provided by a third-party service that connects Telerivet's servers to the telephone networks for SMS messages and/or voice calls.

Some virtual numbers support both SMS and voice calls, while other virtual numbers only support one or the other.

Direct Availability and Pricing

Organizations in the United States and Canada can get a virtual number directly from Telerivet. Telerivet will charge a per-message fee for messages and calls sent via your virtual phone number, in addition to the normal price of your service plan. Reserving a virtual number directly from Telerivet requires approval of your organization's use case.

For SMS, virtual numbers are intended for communicating with mobile phones in the same country. International SMS is often unreliable, so we recommend getting a phone number in the same country as the people you communicate with. In countries where virtual phone numbers aren't available, we recommend using the Telerivet Gateway app on an Android phone.

The capabilities of Telerivet's virtual numbers are the same as phone numbers purchased directly from Twilio, although the prices are different.

Please note that virtual numbers can't be used to verify a phone number with banks or online services like WhatsApp, Google, PayPal, or Skype. SMS messages containing a verification code from an online service will not be received.

Bring Your Own Connectivity

Telerivet integrates with third-party SMS gateway APIs and voice APIs that provide virtual phone numbers.

If you get a virtual phone number from any of the providers below, you can connect it to Telerivet's system. Telerivet will not charge a per-message fee for SMS messages or calls sent and received with your virtual phone number, but you will have to pay the provider directly.

Other SMS Gateway Providers

Do you want to use another SMS gateway service or aggregator with Telerivet? We can integrate with nearly any provider that offers a SMPP or HTTP API for sending and/or receiving SMS messages.

Since custom integrations require Telerivet to do additional work for initial development, ongoing maintenance, and support, additional fees may apply above Telerivet's normal service plan pricing.

Pricing for custom integrations depends on the API. To discuss pricing for custom integrations, contact us at support@telerivet.com.

Note that in addition to Telerivet's service plan and integration fees, you'll also have to pay the API provider directly for costs such as the messages you send you send/receive, reserving your virtual number or shortcode, and any other costs involved in using their platform.
